Small Living Room Layout Secrets Pt. 1: Nail Your Focal Point & Sofa Placement

When your living room is on the smaller side, even beautiful furniture can feel squeezed if the layout isn’t right.
The good news? A simple shift in placement or perspective can open up space and change how the whole room feels.
Let’s start with the foundations - finding your focal point and placing your sofa in a way that makes your space flow naturally.
1. Start With Your Small Living Room’s Focal Point
Every good layout begins with one clear focus.
Ask yourself: what’s the star of your room?
- If the TV is your focal point: Center your sofa directly on the TV wall or line it up to face the screen comfortably.
- If you’ve got an amazing window view: Angle the sofa slightly so you can enjoy both the TV and the window. Avoid pushing it flat against the wall - a little breathing space helps.
- If you have a fireplace: Treat it as the heart of the room. Angle your seating around it, and let the TV sit secondary.
Try to avoid “competing” focal points (like a big cabinet across from the TV). When your eye has too many places to go, the room feels smaller and busier.
Pro tip: Always leave a narrow “corridor” from the door to the sofa so guests don’t have to cross in front of the TV every time they move around- it’s a small adjustment that makes the whole room feel more natural.

2. Sofa Placement: Against The Wall Or Floating?
In small living rooms, most people instinctively push the sofa against a wall. Sometimes that’s the best move - but not always.
- Against the wall: Ideal in very narrow spaces, as it opens the center for a coffee table and walkway.
- Floating the sofa: Surprisingly, leaving a small gap behind (about a hand’s width to a few centimeters) can make the room look bigger. Add a slim console or low shelf behind it for plants or lighting to create a more layered look.
- In long rooms: Try placing the sofa across the width of the space instead of following the length. This shortens the look of the room and creates a cozy conversation zone.
For easy movement:
- Keep about 60-90 cm between the sofa and the TV stand.
- Leave 30-45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table - enough to stretch your legs but still reach drinks comfortably.
A thoughtful sofa arrangement sets the tone for everything else.
Once this piece feels right, the rest of your furniture will naturally start to fall into place.
